From Lump to Vessel, From Slavery to Freedom, 2008
Porcelain
In memory of Lucia Litman
When potters create plates on the wheel they generally begin with a lump of clay, create a plate, and remove it from the remaining mass. . . . In this seder plate the lumps of clay remain attached. The formless clay masses become precise objects modeling the transition from slavery to freedom experienced by the Israelites who left Egypt, capturing this particular moment of rebirth in an abstract manner.
Exhibited in New Works/ Old Story: 80 Artists at the Passover Table, The Dorthy Saxe Invitational, Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco, February 27 - June 9, 2009.
