Headscarf, 2003, 2005
Stainless steel ballchain, knitting needles, 85 x 50 x 3 cm
Reminiscent of the hijad, shavis and other head coverings, ‘Headscarf’ is knitted of ballchain, the same material used to hang soldier’s ID tags. It is secured in place with the knitting needles and hints that it must serve to protect the women physically. The potential protective qualities of craft are explored.
Exhibited in the show Headguard, Bezalel Academy Gallery, Tel-Aviv, Israel, Safe: Design Takes on Risk, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, Rough Cut: Design Takes a Sharp Edge, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Contemporary Galleries: 1980-Now, Museum of Modern Art, New York. The work was accepted into the permanent collection of the MoMA in 2006.
