OTHERHOOD & MOTHERHOOD
When I think of Otherhood, I think of it as a term that can contain within it the definition that Melanie Notkin uses in her book by the same name (which I have not yet read, by the way, and probably should read!). I see Otherhood as any type of childrearing that does not fit the cultural expectations within the context that the childrearing takes place. That's a mouthful! What otherhood is will vary from place to place geographically and even from household to household. It might change over time as things that were once "alternative" become part of the norm or even the mainstream. Motherhood, on the otherhand, might also be otherhood at times. It all depends. For now Motherhood is simply a place were people can go to check-in with our mothers group. People can also check out my little nuggets of "Aha Moments!" under MY HACKS. And of course, follow the blog "Sock Collector". |
